Calculators — Bolt verification

Bolt verification

Shear failure and perforation of a bolt in a single- or double-cut connection, taking into account permissible stresses.

Based on Roloff/Matek and DIN EN 1993-1-8 (simplified approach without partial safety factors)
Result

Rough estimate without partial safety factors. For the verified report: Hebelwerk.

A bolt rarely fails due to shear; it usually fails due to hole wall failure or bending. The calculator above performs a rough check of the first two cases: it distributes the force across the shear surfaces and compares the shear stress with the permissible value, then it checks the stress per unit area in the thinnest flange.

What the computer calculates

The shear stress is τ = F / (n · A), where n = 1 or 2 (shear faces) and A = π · d² / 4. The hole clearance is p = F / (d · t), where t is the thickness of the relevant flange. Both values are compared against the permissible stresses, which you specify yourself based on the material and safety requirements.

What he doesn’t realise

Bending of the bolt due to play between the lugs, fatigue strength under pulsating loads, notch effect at notches, friction and fit. This is precisely where Hebelwerk comes into its own: here, the bolt force is derived from the kinematics over the entire stroke, the plate geometry is specified in the drawing, and the verification is included in the report along with the calculation method.

Pins at each joint derived from the kinematic bearing reactions, with bending due to play between the brackets. Report with calculation steps, version and release stamp.
